Course Description: A complete life science curriculum from MasterBooks. We will explore the amazing variety of plants that God created! Learn about the parts of plants and flowers and how plants get energy to grow. We will explore the incredibly complex wonder of the human body, created by God! Learn about the amazing functions of each system of our body. We will also explore every facet of the animal kingdom God created! Discover how each animal was created to be unique, from cuddly mammals and slimy frogs, to jellyfish, butterflies, and bacteria.

Literacy and Reading Comprehension

Course Description: The children will explore various literary works from folktales & fables, storybooks presenting various themes, and connected literary works to pull together an overall theme. Children will be sharpening their listening skills, following along to reading skills, and independent reading skills throughout the class. The class will then require students to express their comprehension of the various readings through discussion, written work, and responding to questions.
Prerequisites: Child must have basic reading and writing skills. For example: Is able to attempt to sound out words & read short sentences and follow along with read aloud passages. Writing: should know how to independently write letters and at least spell words through sounding out letters (inventive).
Homework: There will be reading and comprehension questions weekly. In addition, children will be encouraged to engage in independent reading.

Mathematical Reasoning

Course Description: This course introduces elementary school students to mathematical reasoning and analysis in real world context. Students will apply elementary school level mathematical methods and concepts to real life objectives and tasks. Rather than solving lists of math problems, students will be presented with practical situations that require basic quantitative analysis. Students will (i) identify the missing information; (ii) formulate the mathematical solution, and; (iii) solve the problem the student put together to resolve the question presented. Basic arithmetic understanding and skills will be developed and honed within this framework.
Prerequisites: Basic counting to at least 10. Written number recognition.
Homework: Each week, I will hand out several problems for students to work on during the week. These will take approximately 1-2 hours per week to complete.

Course Description: Students will learn about the amazing design and characteristics of flying creatures as part of God's creation. This is a core science curriculum, we will work through the 14 modules over the course of the year. Students will explore animal classification, dynamics of flight and connect the design seen in these incredible creators to the Creator. We will use the note booking journal that accompanies the text.
Prerequisites: Must be able to copy sentences into workbook from the board.

Course Description: Using Abeka Our America (5th edition) this class will instill patriotism into your second and third graders with lessons about the people who made America great. Students will learn the historical accounts of the Pilgrims, Native Americans, early colonists, pioneers, cowboys, and immigrants. It will give them a better understanding of American holidays, patriotic songs, and flag etiquette. Your students will begin to learn where all 50 of the states are on a map.

Course Description: Using Legends and Leagues North, a Veritas curriculum, students will learn world geography. This North program includes: The British Isles, Europe, former USSR, and Russia. Geography will be learned through characters and stories, songs to assist with memorization, comprehension worksheets and maps. Culture will be emphasized through hands-on projects, themed snacks and more. This is a hands on class. Students will be asked to read out loud, identify countries on maps and prepare oral presentations.
Homework: Finish class work ( 1 hr or less) and listen to geography songs daily. Students will be asked to do 1-2 presentations throughout the year to include a food dish to share.

Joy of Baking

Course Description: Students will experience preparing a variety of baked goods from scratch, as well as decorating their own mini cake. Although they will not be allowed to use the oven in class, they will be taught oven safety. They will learn how to properly measure ingredients and their purposes in the recipe. They will experiment with ingredients to learn how it affects the final product. Taste testing for discussion will be included. Please note this is not an allergy/food sensitivity friendly course.
Homework: Parent help needed to use oven for at-home baking assignments. Baking assignments approximately once per month and the amount of time to prepare and bake the recipe will vary. No more than half an hour to complete worksheets or to watch short videos on non-baking homework weeks.
IEW Discoveries in Writing

Course Description: Students will learn to take notes, retell narrative stories, summarize references, write from pictures, and create compositions using the Structure and Style Writing Method based on a wide variety of fascinating subjects. These lessons cover seven of the nine IEW Units.
Homework: Writing assignments weekly and revisions of assignments as needed. Students will need an “editor” at home to proofread compositions using a provided checklist.

Course Description: This is a class with a large scope. It is a study of various art forms which are studied through the exploration of poetry, music, etiquette, cooking, hand crafting and works of fine art. Each topic we cover will explore the art forms in relationship to the theme we are studying. Some themes are, love of family, travel, the magic of holidays, sensational seasons, all creatures great and small, in the garden, an attitude of gratitude, and at the beach.
Prerequisites: Students must be able to be solid readers and writers. This class will have a significant amount of memorization as well.

WORD Detectives

Course Description: In Jonathan Park, we will be listening to adventures that follow the Park and Brenan families as they travel the world searching for evidence for Biblical accounts in history and creation! Although the stories are fictitious, each action-packed adventure is based on real places, events, or discoveries! We will also be digging deeper by working through the comprehensive companion study guide that corresponds with the audio adventure and details the science behind the adventure. Students will also complete a poster project covering one of the topics we discuss and learn about in class.
Homework: Occasional finishing classwork, as well as make a creation poster project.
Game Inventors Workshop

Supplies Needed: Each student will need to purchase: The Game Inventor's Guidebook by Brian Tinsman. It can be purchased on Amazon. I will supply some basic materials, dice and blank cards. If the game the students work on require special components (such as a 3-d printed part) they will be required to supply their own.
Course Description: In the Game Inventors Workshop participants will learn the process about developing and publishing card and board games. Class time will be divided between discussing homework, playing games, and analyzing the games we play. Throughout the year students will be encourage to create their own game, either as an individual or in groups. We will then spend time play testing and refining these games. Warning: Play testing games can be a lot of fun but, if you're not able to take criticism well this may not be the class for you. It takes a lot of work to get a game ready to be published - it's not a quick process. Criticism during play testing should not be taken personal - it is someone else's opinion on what might make your game better. I will try to end the year with a class room interview (through a video chat session) with a game publisher who can give you general advice on how to prepare your game to be presented and submitted to a company for publication.
Prerequisites: None - but a good imagination helps

Course Description: In this class we will explore the many types of home arts! Course Description: This class will cover Reptiles semester one and Botany semester two. If you have an animal lover in your home, join us as we learn about the most wild, colorful, and interesting reptiles in the world—accompanied by daily geography lessons. Each week we will introduce at least one new reptile. We will learn about its appearance, habitat, diet, and life cycle as well as many more interesting facts. Semester two we will jump into the beautiful botany unit. We will make purposeful connections to everyday life to make it meaningful. We will be cooking and baking to connect the parts of the plants in nature with the foods that they eat. They will be labeling, making observations, recording, researching, and learning more about the incredible plant world and its impact on our lives. Throughout the year we will work through the entire high school level student book for each unit. In addition students will be expected to write a research paper and do a class presentation each semester. This is expected to give students enough hours to receive 1 full science credit.

Introduction To History of Western Civilization

Course Description: The course provides high school students with a basic understanding of the history of our Western civilization, from it’s dawn in the classical antiquity of ancient Greece then Rome, through the rise of Christianity, Western Europe, and the United States, ending in the post – 9/11 world. Rather than memorizing sets of dates, names etc., the goal is for students to learn to analyze series of events within the larger context of Western history, and understand causal relationships that link past to present. A central theme of the course will be the pivotal role Christianity played in the development of Western culture and institutions.

Character Design

Course Description: This class will go over the basics of drawing and further expand on

Introduction to Workplace Research

Course Description: This course introduces the basics of researching, writing, and presenting in a practical, corporate & workplace oriented context. Today more than ever, managers expect written communication to be very concise and very precise. Highly complex concepts need to be distilled into emails and a few Powerpoint bullet points.
Students will research several topics, developing the fundamentals of sound research. Students will then draft a document that concisely states their findings and conclusions. Finally, students will create a succinct Powerpoint presentation and use it to guide a brief but thorough oral presentation of the key research findings and takeaways. This will fullfill the requirements for 1/2 HS credit.
Prerequisites: Basic Microsoft Word and Powerpoint skill set. No prior specialized knowledge required.
Homework: Students should expect approximately 3 hours of homework per week, consisting of researching the assigned topic, drafting and proofreading their assignments, and rehearsing their presentations.

Professional Model Building

Course Description: In this class students will learn how to build models professionally. They will learn about what glues are best for what materials, what paints are best for what materials, how to create engaging dioramas and other aspects of building and displaying models. The goal of this class is that each student will have created a professional looking diorama by the end of the year. I will supply each student with wooden structure kits to complete during classroom time. If the students wish to bring in their own models to work on during class time that is fully acceptable and welcome. For examples please visit www.besttrains.com ( Look at the premium kits or the just the basics kits). These are the types of models students will build if they do not bring in their own models.
